Purpose of Formation
Essential workers across the country are struggling to balance personal/family health with economic hardship during these uncertain times. Job losses, hunger, illness, childcare, housing, and fear for the future put tremendous stress on Farmworker families. SBC LULAC Council 2890 believes that it is the responsibility of all Americans to stand with the Farmworker community who continue to work under unsafe conditions.
Our migrant community deserves to be afforded all the protections as others to help navigate this difficult crisis. These selfless front-line farmworkers are diligently working to provide the needed critical food supply. These farmworkers, who remain unprotected under the shelter in place order, continue working. Carrying the unimaginable burden of duty without personal protective equipment. LULAC will never turn a blind eye to human rights when the call to action is one of extreme importance across the nation.
In partnership and with the recommendation of the United Farm Workers of America, our local council formed the San Benito County LULAC Council 2890 Farmworker Task Force. Members were invited to participate with a commitment of working together to address the needs of our farmworkers working in San Benito County. Task Force members with various backgrounds responded and today are part of a 18 member Farmworker Task Force.
Since the formation of the LULAC Farmworker Task Force,
we have held Conference call meetings held to date - 21 meetings, various Zoom and Google Meet Meetings with various agencies and Community leaders to address the needs of our farmworker community.
